GEXVal Won the Suzhou Startup Contest Japan Tournament!

Dr. Lili Mao, Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) and Board member of GEXVal, participated in the JINJI Lake Startup Contest Japan held in Tokyo on August 5, 2021 and was selected as a finalist for the JINJI Lake Startup Contest to be held in Suzhou.

JINJI Lake startup contest is the most influential world-class business contest in China and has been held nine times with the participation of nearly 10,000 companies. The total fundraising amount of participating companies exceeds 180 billion yen, and many companies have been listed on the Asian and US stock markets. During the Japan tournament, the Marunouchi contest site was connected to the Suzhou Industrial Park site, known for having the best industrial performance in China, and active discussions took place.

The Japan Contest finalists will be given an opportunity for business development and fundraising support via Suzhou Industrial Park along with support by the private sector and the government. In addition, companies that win the tournament's final round in Suzhou will be provided with prize money and substantial support from the science and technology benefits policy.

Dr. Mao stated as follows: “It has been reported that there are about 20 million rare diseases* pateints awaiting for effective treatment in China. In recent years, drug discovery efforts for rare diseases have been active in China, and the Chinese version of the US rare disease database NORD, CORD, is also being established. GEXVal would like to take the opportunity to deliver medicines to as many patients and their families as possible through partnerships with Chinese pharmaceutical companies.

Rare disease*: Diseases with a small number of patients. The definition varies among countries. For example, in Europe, rare diseases are defined as diseases with less than 5 patients per 10,000 people; in the United States, diseases with fewer than 200,000 patients; and in Japan, the number of domestic patients fewer than 50,000 people. A lot of rare diseases are designated as intractable diseases.
